Forged in Dreams and Magick by Kat Bastion
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I read this book in one sitting. It was just that good. The story was fresh and engaging. The romantic angle was unique as well. I haven't ever read a book in which the woman had two soul mates. I was completely sucked into this story. Just when I thought things were clipping along at a nice pace another twist was thrown in. I cannot wait for the rest of the story.. when it comes out.
It isn't often that I find a book that I can get so wrapped up in emotionally but man! this one does it. And the key part, was that with both men the connection was just as strong. The horrible tearing of Isobel's heart while going back and forth almost made me cry.
I loved the descriptions, especially that of Isobel and Velloc making the connection with animals and the world around them. Iain was likewise captivating, I liked how he made the best of his travels to the future to become a movie star in a relatively short amount of time. The initial discovery of the box seemed rather rushed in comparison, but given all that happened afterward, it is completely acceptable.
I think that Ms. Bastion will be gaining a spot on my auto read/buy list!
I received a netgalley copy in return for providing an honest review.

Fired Up by Mary Connealy

It seems that there may be more books in this series that I have not read. The story itself can stand by itself but it does seem that a reader would benefit by understanding the other story lines.
I know that Glynna is a prisoner to her circumstances in many ways, but it seems as though she was in denial about her own abilities. How could a woman not know that her cooking stunk? And why on earth would she try and feed others?? I know that women were scarce but honestly I would think that men of that time would have more care for their stomachs.
I liked Dare, and I understood his point that he was not a "real" doctor; but I thought the continual harping and moping about it was overdone. Then suddenly, a newspaper says that he can be considered a Dr. and then he is fine with it.
Aside from all that the story was entertaining. The many theories on who was trying to kill Dare held my interest long enough to finish the book, but honestly there wasn't much that captivated me, or was very memorable. There were also several intimations of things to come in subsequent books. Still it was a quick read.
I got an ARC from Netgalley in return for an honest review.

The Ultimatum By Susan Kearney
I jumped into this series in the middle, I haven’t yet had a
chance to read the rest but I have every intention to do so. This was different
than anything else I have read recently. I liked the conflict created by Alara’s
biological need to regenerate. I also liked that Alara wasn’t clingy or needy.
Yes, she was being driven by her body’s needs, but she had enough presence of
mind not to try and force the relationship even when she could have done so.
The accepted philosophy that having different people/species
involved because they helped see the situation from different perspectives is
one that our world would greatly benefit from accepting. Xander was a good leader and once he was able
to understand how to use his astral power he was able to heal his old wounds
regarding his personal “cowardice”
The Perceptive Ones, Clarie’s interventions in particular,
allowed the story to advance in ways that normally (within the scope of the
Universe that had been created in the story) couldn’t happen. A longer trip to find the cure would have had
Xander and Alara interacting quite a bit more, not to mention that Kirek would
most likely have been killed for his snooping. The one thing with using
convenient measures of transporting and time travel is that in the long run I
feel like some of the character’s development gets rushed.
I really enjoyed this read!

Dead Sexy Dragon by Lolita Lopez
I liked the story for the most part, but there were several
things that stood out to me. There is a
lot of talk about how being with a mortal is impossible, and then suddenly it
isn’t. There wasn’t a lot of detail as to why the Knights were still hunting
them… I mean come on... hundreds of years and you can‘t let it go?? The
brotherhood is supposed to be aware of what is going on and yet they couldn’t
connect the dots to see how Cora’s brother was killed by the knights due to his
connection to Stig.
I know that the book was short, so that does require that
things move at a faster pace… but sometimes you can make it work and sometimes
you can’t. This just didn’t. That being
said, if this could be extended to a full length story I think it has great
potential.

Deadly Devotion by Sandra Orchard
Deadly Devotion by Sandra Orchard
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
The story was engaging, but I guess that I kept waiting for something to happen that didn't. I wanted to see more depth in the relationship between Tom and Kate. I didn't really feel like the romantic connection between them was real in any way. I really wanted Kate to slow down and realize that she was going a million miles/hr in every direction without fully realizing what was going on. I also really wished I could slap her friend for being a bit obnoxious. You cannot force people, even good friends, to open up about personal issues, not even with ice cream. I know she meant well.. but honestly!
I did like that the murderer wasn't obvious and that I had to read the whole story to find out what happened. I wanted to know more about the research that Kate and Daisy were doing, as well as the Peter character that she never got around to contacting after he left that cryptic message. Perhaps that will come into play in the next book.
I will probably read the next book, if only to see if anything resolves.
